Slight Stumble For High Handicap Team At Moreton-in-Marsh

The Broadwas and Moreton-in-Marsh B teams after their game on Friday

The Broadwas High Handicap GC Team faced another hard battle on Friday when they travelled to the Cotswolds to play Moreton-in-Marsh B in the South West Federation GC High Handicap League.

Brian Humphrey’s clearance sends his red high over the hoop

This was the team’s second trip to Moreton this season and the ‘B’ team proved to be as fiercely competitive as the club’s High Handicap ‘A’ team.

The Broadwas team comprised Jean Faulkner, Jim Norris, David Harington and Hazel Felton, with Brian Humphreys and David Kaner making their debuts for the squad.

Broadwas began the match well, with Jim Norris beating Moreton’s Kathy Jayne, 7-4 in the first round of the singles. In the doubles, David Kaner and Jean Faulkner beat Andy Jayne and Jacqui Thomas, 7-3. In a hard-fought battle against Marilyn Talbot Smith and Saby Jackman, Brian Humphreys and Hazel Felton won a half-point with a 4-4 draw at the end of 50 minutes. Meanwhile, David Harington narrowly lost out 4-5 to Christine McCormic, when time was called.

Jim Norris and David Harington didn’t fare as well. Jim lost 2-7 to the on-form Andy Jayne, while David Harington also lost 2-7, to the Moreton B captain, Wendy Coleman.

An emphatic clearance from David Harington at Moreton

After lunch, the weather brightened up from its dull start and it brought a great 5-3 win for Hazel against Marilyn Talbot Smith in the singles, while the doubles partnership of Brian and Jean earned a half-point from Wendy and Kathy when they drew 4-4. Jim and David Harington lost out narrowly to Andy Jayne and Christine McCormic 6-7, with Andy scoring the winning point on the very last stroke of the game. Surprisingly, David Kaner, who had been playing really well all morning, lost to Jacqui Thomas 0-7 in his last game of the match.

As usual, the Broadwas team had a warm and friendly welcome from the Moreton-in-Marsh club players and we look forward to the return match at Broadwas, on 14th July.
