
The Broadwas GC Handicap League team had a great win in their local derby against Worcester Norton on Wednesday.
The South West Croquet Federation fixture began in dreadful weather conditions, with most players having to don waterproofs in order to keep comfortable in persistent rain.
But the Broadwas side, led by new captain Billy Cooke took control right at the outset, winning all four of the first round games.
In their doubles games, Eileen Holt and Gill Richardson beat Norton’s Tim Munslow and Rose Taylor 7-2, while Howard Freeman and Peter Hill were victorious when they beat Robin Higgins and Jenny Vale in a thirteen hoop battle, 7-6.

In the singles, Billy Cooke beat Worcester Norton captain Chris Dunn, 7-3, while Jim Dryden also scored a 7-3 victory, over Martin Pollard.


In the next round of singles, Gill Richardson beat Anna Hall, 7-2, while Howard Freeman beat Wendy Tilling, 7-5. Billy Cooke took his second singles win of the morning, by beating Robin Higgins on Lawn Two, 7-2.
Eileen Holt and Jim Dryden both shared points with Norton by drawing games 5-5 and 4-4, respectively. Peter Hill narrowly missed out on a win against Tim Munslow at the thirteenth hoop on Lawn One, 6-7.


Captain Billy Cooke remained undefeated on the day, beating Martin Pollard, 7-3 in the singles and then partnering Howard Freeman in the final doubles matches of the day, beating Norton’s Chris Dunn and Wendy Tilling, 7-5.

Eileen Holt also remained undefeated, beating Chris Dunn, 7-2 and Robin Higgins 7-6 in the afternoon.

Gill Richardson beat Wendy Tilling in the singles in the afternoon rounds, 7-2, but suffered a defeat when she partnered Jim Dryden in the doubles, at the hands of Martin Pollard and Anna Hall, 3-7.
Howard Freeman took a singles victory in the afternoon, by beating Tim Munslow, 7-6.
The final score was 14 points to Broadwas and 6 points to Worcester Norton.
