Broadwas Players Have A Great Day In National GC Competition

Two Broadwas players are in good positions at the end of the first day’s play in  the National Forest GC Championship.

Jon Carrington and Billy Cooke are both lying second in their respective groups in the level-play championship, being held at Ashby Croquet Club in Leicestershire.

At the end of the afternoon’s play, Jon Carrington beat Andy Sherwood 7-5, while Billy Cooke beat John Picken 7-5, to put them both runners-up in their groups, with one day to go.

Currently, Billy Cooke lies second in Block A, having four wins overall in the seven player Group, with +9 net hoops to his tally.

In Block B, Jon Carrington won five games with a net hoops score of +13. Jon only succumbed to Arthur Rowe 5-7, late in the afternoon.

Jon beat Ray Mountfield 7-3 early in the day, and then Christine Wood in a tight game – his second game  of the morning, 7-6.

Later, Jon comfortably beat Tim Barzychi 7-2 and then went on to defeat Glynis Davies,7-4.

Meanwhile, Billy  began his day with a defeat at the hands of Tony McCann, 4-7.

Billy sprang back with a 7-3 win over Les Heard, but then went down 4-7 to Nick Archer.

Later in the day, Billy’s fortunes changed, picking up three wins in succession against Raymond Morel, 7-2, Colin Spencer 7-6, and finally, John Picken 7-2.

Billy ended his day with four wins and a net hoops score of +9.

In the semi-finals on Sunday, Jon Carrington faces Nick Archer, who topped Block A with six wins and +20 net hoops, while Billy Cooke will play Arthur Rowe, who topped Block B unbeaten with +20 net hoops.
