High Bisquer’s Tournament Produces Worthy Finalists

The club has held its first in-house daylong tournament of the season.

And what a day it was!

Despite the dubious weather – cold and sometimes wet – ten players competed in the annual Broadwas High Bisquer’s Shield. The competition is open to all players with a handicap of eight or above.

Eileen Holt organised the day, supported by Barry Kirby.

There were some very tight games and fierce battles on four courts, with all players facing each other in two blocks of five.

Gill Brooks pretty much dominated the Black Block throughout the day, but at the end of the blocks rounds, 18-handicap Vivien Ellis was declared the winner of the Red Block.

Gill and Vivien battled through pretty miserable weather during the final and the game went to six-all after a magnanimously sporting gesture from Gill prevented Vivien attempting to go through hoop 12, the wrong way.

The tournament was won by Vivien with an incredible hoop shot from a considerable distance, which had to be seen to be believed.

Some were brave enough to sit outside to watch the on-court tussles

After the game, Vivien said “I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Gill for the final game which could have been won by either of us – her magnanimity in gently reminding me I was preparing to go through  the 12th  hoop from the wrong direction will always hold me in debt to her!”

Eileen reassured players at the end of the day that half of them had gained more points than they had lost – a relief to anyone in the right half!

Profound thanks must go to Eileen Holt for organising the day and to Barry Kirby for his support and Gill Richardson for her work in the kitchen during the morning session.
