Four Broadwas players were in action over the weekend at Cheltenham.

Jeff Faulkner, Billy Cooke, Jon Carrington and Stuart Smith all competed in the two day Cheltenham Challenge Golf Croquet Event held at Cheltenham Croquet Club’s Old Bath Road ground. The tournament comprised of six games in four blocks on Saturday, followed by a knockout competition on Sunday.

Jon Carrington and Stuart Smith both found themselves drawn in the same group.

At the conclusion of the first day, Jon led Group C, winning all six of his games, with a net hoop score of +20, beating Stuart 7-4 in their clash.

Stuart came third in the group, winning four of his six games and with Jon, also qualifying for the knockout stage.

Meanwhile, club coach Jeff Faulkner also came third –  in Group B – with three wins in total.

Sadly, Billy was unable to build on his success in the Chester ‘C’ Level GC tournament last week, winning only two of his Group A matches.

In the knockout round held on Sunday, Jon just missed out on progressing, when he was beaten by Ray Bassett, 10-9 in the first round.

But in the knockout stage, Stuart got into his stride and beat Ignacio Arturo Gross Alesanco 10-9 in the first round. He then won against Ray Basset with an emphatic 10-5 win, taking him to the semi-final.

Stuart then went on to the final of the tournament by beating Group C runner-up, Richard Thompson  10-7.

In the final, Stuart met Paul Gunn, winner of Group A.

Jon Carrington watched the final. He said “Stuart started well and was 4-1 up in a 19 point game, when the tide started to turn”

“Paul scored a couple of jumps to bring him back to 6-6.”

“Stuart then missed a shot for the 13th he would  have normally scored and was soon 8-6 down.”

Jon went on “Stuart then took control of the 15th, with his ball blocking Paul’s path to the hoop.”

“Paul then decided to jump from 4-5ft!”

“He scored… AND… it ran all the way down and scored 16 as well !”

“It’s the most amazing shot I’ve ever seen and a truly  amazing way to close out the match 10-6,” said Jon.

Diane receives a much coveted bottle of champagne from Chris.

A truly amazing event happened at Friday’s roll-up.

Brand new club member Diane Grove, in only her second session at Stoney Ley, was the recipient of a bottle of Croft Champagne for a shot during her match after John Steel’s appeal to Chris Croft.

The really staggering thing was that Diane’s shot was so clear-cut, Chris gave up the champagne without having to have his arm savagely twisted behind his back, like he usually does.

Welcome to Broadwas Croquet Club, Diane.
