BROADWAS CROQUET CLUB JUBILEE EVENT

Last Friday 3rd June, 38 members of Broadwas Croquet Club met at the Club, to celebrate the Platinum Jubilee of the Queen, the patron of the Croquet Association. Members arrived – some dressed in fancy dress, many in red, white and blue outfits and a few bedecked with union jacks. The award for the most original outfit must go to Peter Lawrence who came dressed as the Mad Hatter from Alice in Wonderland which featured a memorable game of croquet.

The theme for the afternoon was fun croquet. The first half was devoted to golf croquet but with a few subtle changes to the rules. At 3 o’clock everyone congregated in front of the pavilion for tea and an amazing selection of home-made cakes, generously donated by members. Mugs and cups were then exchanged for glasses of fizz, when our president, John Steel, proposed a toast to Her Majesty.

Members then had the chance to try Pirate croquet – golf croquet but with the additional rule that if you hit another player’s ball, you steal all their accumulated points to date. Most members thoroughly enjoyed this variation and have requested that it is played more often.

With the sun shining and our flags flying, our lawns looked superb. The afternoon was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone who attended.
